Pocket Taiwan is a Mandarin phrasebook app for people living in or visiting Taiwan. We built it to be private by default: there is no account to create, and the app does not collect or sell your personal information. This policy explains exactly what data the app uses, where it goes, and the choices you have.
To make the app work and remember your preferences, the following is saved locally in your browser/app storage on your device. This information stays on your device except for the optional practice uses described below:
You can erase all of this at any time by clearing the app's data / site data in your browser or device settings, or by uninstalling the app.
The app includes an optional feature that lets you practice a conversation with an AI assistant. When you use it:
Anthropic processes this data as our service provider. Please avoid typing sensitive personal information (such as financial details, government ID numbers, or health information) into the practice chat. Anthropic's handling of API data is described in its policies at anthropic.com/legal/privacy.
World conversations require an internet connection. When you open the world, up to 200 saved phrase IDs are sent to our Cloudflare service so supported free favorites can receive priority. When you practice, the text you type or the text produced by your device/browser's speech recognition, the selected shop or object, and your practice actions are sent to that service to check responses and update progress. The world service does not receive microphone audio. Your browser or device's speech-recognition provider may process audio under its own settings and policies.
The service uses an anonymous random session credential. Session progress, supported favorite IDs, discovered words, and recent response results expire after six hours. We do not persist submitted transcripts or audio in the world service, and application request logging is disabled. Hosting providers may still process technical request information as described below. The phrasebook's local favorites and review deck remain on your device.
If you purchase the paid version, the transaction is handled by the app store you installed from — Google Play Billing on Android, or the App Store's In-App Purchase system on iOS. We do not receive or store your full payment card details. The store processes the payment and shares limited purchase information with us as needed to confirm and support your purchase. That store's handling of your data is governed by its own policy: Google Privacy Policy (Android) or Apple Privacy Policy (iOS).
Pocket Taiwan does not display third-party advertising and does not include advertising trackers. If we ever add basic, privacy-respecting usage analytics in the future, we will update this policy first and describe what is collected.
The app is served as a website/installable app through standard web hosting and a content-delivery/relay network (including Netlify and Cloudflare). Like virtually all websites, these providers may automatically log technical request data such as IP address, device/browser type, and timestamps for security and reliability. This is standard server logging and is not used by us to identify you.
The app is intended for general audiences and is not directed at children under 13. While the app lets you indicate that children are traveling with you (to tailor phrases), this is a non-identifying preference and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date at the top. Material changes will be reflected here before they take effect.
